How Does Mud Pump Work?

Drilling mud pumps are reciprocating piston or plunger pumps, operating on the principle of periodic working chamber volume changes to suck and discharge fluid.

Driven by the power end motor, reducer, crankshaft, connecting rod, etc., the piston or plunger reciprocates in the cylinder, dividing the process into suction and discharge strokes.

During the suction stroke, the piston moves outward to expand the cylinder volume, creating negative pressure that closes the discharge valve and opens the suction valve, drawing mud into the cylinder.

In the discharge stroke, the piston moves inward to compress the cylinder, increasing internal pressure to close the suction valve and open the discharge valve; the pressurized mud is then sent to the drill hole via the pipeline, stabilized by the accumulator to reduce pressure fluctuations.

This continuous cycle ensures stable mud supply, with key components like the wear-resistant fluid end and safety valve guaranteeing efficiency and safety.

Two Types of Mud Pump

Our mud pumps are engineered to deliver high-pressure drilling fluid throughout the system. This critical process cools the drill bit, carries cuttings to the surface, and stabilizes the wellbore. Built for reliability and efficiency, our pumps ensure smooth and productive drilling operations for your water well projects.

Mounted Mud Pump

This mud pump is directly mounted on the drilling rig—eliminating extra installation steps, saving space, and reducing connection failures for seamless integration. Its built-in hydraulic drip system continuously flushes and cleans the pump piston, preventing debris buildup, minimizing wear, and sustaining optimal performance. This design boosts drilling efficiency while cutting maintenance time, perfectly complementing rig operations.

Wheeled Mud Pump

This wheeled mud pump is positioned beside the drilling rig—boasting excellent mobility via its robust tires, enabling quick relocation across job sites (even rough terrain) without heavy lifting. Its side-mounted design shortens mud delivery pipelines, reducing energy loss and connection failures. Perfect for flexible drilling layouts, it adapts to diverse site conditions, boosting operational efficiency while cutting setup time—an ideal match for on-site agility needs.

How to adjust the displacement and pressure of a reciprocating piston mud pump?

How to adjust the displacement of a reciprocating piston mud pump

(1) Adjusting the stroke length of the pump
Changes in the pump chamber capacity: The stroke length of the pump directly affects the volume of the pump chamber, thereby affecting the displacement. The longer the stroke, the greater the amount of mud pumped each time the piston moves. Therefore, adjusting the stroke length of the pump can control the pump’s displacement.
Adjustment method: Some pump designs allow the piston stroke length to be changed by adjusting the piston stroke adjustment bolt or mechanical device.
(2) Adjusting the pump speed
Diesel engine drive and inverter control: The reciprocating speed of the piston (i.e., pump speed) is changed by adjusting the diesel engine speed. The higher the pump speed, the more times the piston reciprocates per unit time, and the greater the displacement.
Frequency converter control: Modern reciprocating mud pumps are usually equipped with frequency converters, which can precisely control the displacement by adjusting the motor speed.
(3) Regulating valves
A regulating valve is usually installed at the discharge end of the pump. By adjusting the opening of the discharge valve, the flow path of the fluid is changed, thereby affecting the displacement.
Close the valve: reduce the flow rate and reduce the displacement;
Fully open the valve: maximum flow rate and increase the displacement.

How to adjust the regulating pressure of a reciprocating piston mud pump?

(1) Regulating pump speed
The relationship between pump speed and pressure: An increase in pump speed will cause an increase in pressure because the reciprocating motion of the piston increases the compression force of the fluid. However, too high a pump speed may cause overpressure in the pipeline system, so it is necessary to balance the relationship between pump speed and pressure.
(2) Regulating the discharge valve
Valve function: The opening of the discharge valve directly affects the pump pressure. Partial closure of the valve will increase the pressure in the pump chamber, thereby increasing the discharge pressure. When the valve is fully closed, the pressure will rise rapidly due to the obstruction of fluid flow; when the valve is fully open, the discharge pressure is low.
(3) System pipeline resistance
The resistance of the pipeline will also affect the discharge pressure of the pump. Longer pipelines or more elbows will increase the resistance of fluid flow, resulting in an increase in discharge pressure. Reasonable design of the pipeline system can reduce resistance and avoid excessive discharge pressure of the pump.
(4) Piston working conditions
Piston sealing performance: The sealing performance of the piston directly affects the pressure of the pump. When the sealing effect is good, it can effectively increase the discharge pressure of the pump and prevent fluid leakage.
Piston friction: The friction between the piston and the pump chamber will also affect the pressure. Excessive friction may cause insufficient pump pressure or reduced efficiency.

FAQ of Mud Pump

1

How many piston cylinders does a mud pump have?

Our mud pumps, except for the BW160 model, all have three piston cylinders.
2

What is the drive method for the mud pump?

Our mud pumps support electric, diesel, and hydraulic drives. However, diesel drive is the most common.
3

Can the mud pump be installed on a drilling rig?

Models below BW450 can be installed on drilling rigs. Models above BW600, due to their larger size, cannot be installed on drilling rigs, but can be mounted on a wheeled chassis for towing.
4

Do you have any good suggestions about mud pump wear easily?

Our mud pumps are equipped with a hydraulic drip system. This system is installed on the upper part of the piston rod. Its main function is to clean the piston rod and cool it down to protect the piston. This effectively reduces wear on the components caused by mud and sand.
